This month on the workbench: World Eaters Terminators

While I should have been working on my burgeoning Old World Chracian Warhost, the last few months have nevertheless been pretty busy on the hobby front here in the DeathbyD6 hobby cave.

In fact, there's been so much painting going on that this first installment of this "From the Forge" hobby update has actually been split in half!

You can read about the beginnings of my attempt to build, paint and maybe even win a game with an all-covens Drukhari list soon.

But for now, let's talk terminators!

World Eaters Terminators

20 world eaters red butcher terminators

In the last month or so I've kitbashed and painted (to a tabletop-ish standard) 20 World Eaters Terminators for my World Eater warband, the Marrowborn. I love the idea of the terminators as they bring a different vibe to the rest of the World Eaters run-fast-kill-quick attitude with their relative tankiness. Without proper Red Butchers models to use*, however, I felt some work was needed to turn the 20 Chaos Terminators I nabbed on the cheap from combat patrol magazine into elite killers fitting of the 12th Legion.

I'm also a stickler for making each unit in my army at least a little unique, to distinguish them on the battlefield. I decided on two slightly different approaches to kitbashing the core terminator models to help prevent them looking too repetitive across the two units - which also helped crystalise the story of each unit in my mind.

"I'm also a stickler for making each unit in my army at least a little unique, to distinguish them on the battlefield."

Unit 1: The Spinetakers

10 were kept relatively classic, making use of eightbound heads and bezerker bunny ears with eightbound weapons, all of which fit wonderfully with the Chaos Terminator bodies. They are now the "Spinetakers", the Marrowborn's heavily armoured elite. I'm pleased with the image of them as real beserker elites, so juiced on the fury of Khorne that they are bursting out of their ornate terminator plate.

Unit 2: The Cult of the Ebon Maw

For the second unit of 10 terminators, I decided to make use of Necromunda Corpse Grinder Cult bitz to make the more bestial and violent "Cult of the Ebon Maw": a gang of murderers and butchers, long ago lost to the nails. The Corpse Grinder weapons and heads are suitably brutal and I'm particularly fond of their chainglaves (stand-in chain-fists) for their pleasingly oversized menace.

I recently took all 20 terminators out in a 2,000pt game for their debut and - while certainly less killy than some other units in the World Eaters arsenal - with access to the strats and extra blessings of Vessels of Wrath they held their own pleasingly.

"With access to the strats and extra blessings of Vessels of Wrath, the Terminators held their own pleasingly."

The rest of the list needs a little work, and I doubt Vessels of Wrath can topple Beserker Warband as the World Eaters detachment of choice, but it's an archetype I'm keen to work around with.

Do I want to maaaaybe run 30 in the future...? I'm not saying no. And those new heresy cataphractii terminators sure are tempting...

I'll be back next month for a hopefully more Old World themed update...

Until then,

Alex
